The prophet Isaiah foretells of God’s promise of peace to all people

Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress… The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned….For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the
Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

Please join in!

Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her king; Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the world, the Saviour reigns! Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make his blessings flow
Far as the curse is found, far as the curse is found, Far as, far as, the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of his righteousness,
And wonders of his love, and wonders of his love, And wonders, and wonders, of his love.

The angel Gabriel greets Mary who is to be the mother of Jesus, the promised saviour

Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favoured one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”
But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. And he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

Once in Royal David’s City

Led by
Keturah Kenny
Chloe Noon

Once in royal David’s city, stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby, in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ, her little child.

And through all his wondrous childhood he would honour and obey, Love and watch the gentle mother in whose tender arms he lay: Christian children all should be kind, obedient, good as he.

For he is our childhood’s pattern day by day like us he grew; He was little, weak and helpless; tears and smiles like us he knew; And he feels for all our sadness, and he shares in all our gladness.

And our eyes at last shall see him when he comes on earth again, As the Prince of Peace, our Saviour, soon he will take up his reign: May we in that kingdom sing, praises to our heavenly king.

Luke records the birth of Jesus

And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered.

Silent Night

Led by
Keturah Kenny

Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight; Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia! Christ the Saviour is born, Christ the Saviour is born!

Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light; Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

Away in a Manger

Led by Daniel Thurlow

Away in a manger, no crib for his bed The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.
I love thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky And stay by my cradle, ‘til morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay Close by me forever and love me I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care And fit us to dwell in thy kingdom so fair.

The angels announce the birth of Jesus to shepherds

Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”

probably not:

What child is this?

Led by Keturah Kenney

What child is this who, laid to rest On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds worship and angels sing;
Haste, haste, to bring him praise, The Babe, the Son of Mary.

Why lies he in such mean estate, Where ox and ass are feeding?
Come, have no fear, God’s Son is here His love all loves exceeding.

Nails, spear shall pierce him through, The cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Saviour comes, The Babe, the Son of Mary.

So bring him incense, gold and myrrh, All tongues and peoples, own him;
The King of kings salvation brings, Let every heart enthrone him.

Raise, raise your song on high While Mary sings a lullaby.
Joy, joy for Christ is born, The Babe, the Son of Mary.

The shepherds visit Jesus

So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another,
“Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.”
And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

The first noel

Led by Daniel Thurlow

The first Noel, the angels did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel!

They lookéd up and saw a star Shining in the East beyond them far;
And to the earth it gave great light And so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel!

Now when they had seen him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all those who heard it marvelled at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.

Angels we have heard on high

led by Chloe Noon

Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o’er the plains, And the mountains in reply echoing their joyous strains: Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be which inspire your heav’nly song? Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

Come to Bethlehem and see him whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the new-born King. Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

See within a manger laid Jesus, Lord of heaven and earth! Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, sing with us our Saviour’s birth. Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived. When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord… now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel and the Holy Spirit was on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: ‘Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.”

Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

The wise men search for Jesus

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. So they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet: ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a ruler who will shepherd My people Israel.’”

Matthew 2:1-6

o little town of bethlehem

Led by Daniel Thurlow

O little town of Bethlehem how still we see thee lie Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

O morning stars together proclaim the holy birth And praises sing to God the king and peace to men on earth. For Christ is born of Mary and, gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love

How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him still, the dear Christ enters in.

O Jesus, child of Bethlehem descend to us, we pray Cast out our sin and enter in, be born to us today. We hear the holy angels the great glad tidings tell O come to us, abide with us our Lord Emmanuel.

The wise men follow the star

When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshiped him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

we three kings

led by
Daniel Thurlow

We three kings of Orient are bearing gifts we traverse afar Field and fountain, moor and mountain following yonder star. O Star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light.

Born a king on Bethlehem’s plain, gold I bring to crown him again King forever, ceasing never, over us all to reign. O Star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light.

Frankincense to offer have I; incense for a priest most high; Prayer and praising, voices raising, worshiping him on high. O Star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light.

Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom; Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in the stone-cold tomb. O Star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light.

Glorious now behold him arise King and Lord and sacrifice Alleluia, Alleluia, earth to the heav’n replies O Star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light.

o holy night

led by Chloe Noon

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining ‘Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices! O night divine, the night when Christ was born; O night, O holy night, O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by his cradle we stand. So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, Here came the wise men from Orient land. The King of kings lay thus lowly manger; In all our trials born to be our friend. He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger, Behold your King! Before him lowly bend! Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!

Truly he taught us to love one another, His law is love and his gospel is peace. Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother And in his name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus rise we, Let all within us praise his holy name. Christ is the Lord! Oh praise his name forever. His power and glory ever more proclaim! His power and glory ever more proclaim!

The peace that Jesus Christ will bring is foretold

The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him – the spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the spirit of counsel and of might, the spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord – and he will delight in the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth….
The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them…
They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
